This week was bursting at the seems with absolutely incredible, jar dropping metal. This might have been metal’s best week for the year so far. So many of my highly anticipated albums came out this week and I still haven’t been able to give all of them enough of my time. Like I’ve been saying, this year has been an incredible year for metal. I even posted my “Best of So Far” list this week. If you’re looking for some amazing new metal check it out, you’ll find plenty to love.
First and foremost, the new Saor album Aura came out this week and it’s a breath stealing masterpiece. Anathema’s Distant Satellites is absolutely stunning and an incredible follow up to their last album Weather Systems. The new Darkest Era album Severance, amped up their previously awesome celtic metal sound and refined what was already there to crushing perfection. Falconer’s Black Moon Rising delivered some epic power metal in only a way they can. Tombs came roaring back with the crushing album Savage Gold and may have blown their previous album out of the water. Fucked Up continue to blaze their own hardcore punk path with Glass Boys. Blut Aus Nord and P.H.O.B.O.S. came together for the Triunity just incase you forgot how awesome Blut Aus Nord is. Barghest got down and black metal dirty with The Virtuous Purge and from right in my backyard from Broomfield Colorado, Stoic Dissension’s Autochthon filled my ears with their awesomely epic, doomed out black metal.
That is almost too much for one week! So much amazing music in such a short span of time. This is what metal offers to the world. Incredible album after incredible album. You’re missing out for sure.
Fucked Up – Glass Boys
I love when a band challenges my notions of what their genre should sound like. Fucked Up blow the punk rock conventions out the window. Awesome new album.
Saor – Aura
This album has been on my headphones since Monday and has rarely left them except for a brief period to catch up with some of the other awesome new releases this week. This album is tremendous. An amazing work of beauty on a scale unmatched. As soon as the first note hit I was gone, lost in the majesty of Aura. This currently holds the spot for best album of the year. Buy this album if you even like music. It’s a masterpiece.
Darkest Era – Severance
I thought the last Darkest Era album went criminally underrated. Hopefully, this new one will get some more ears on them as the album is fantastic. It’s infectious, galloping folk metal, straight up and without pretense.
Tombs – Savage Gold
I was a big fan of their last album Path of Totality so I was anxious for this release. Tombs get thrown into that “post metal” category and there are elements of that in their sound but with post metal/rock bands I get an overwhelming sense of pretentiousness. Tombs go for the metal aspects much more honestly and directly on this album without feeling the need to show off by showing you just how “post” they are.
Anathema – Distant Satellites
The new Anathema took a hold of me instantly. From the first song I was gone, lost in the overwhelming beauty and serenity of this album. I wasn’t sure they could top Weather Systems but this one may be a contender. It’s definitely ending up on the year end list. It’s absolutely breathtaking.
Watain – The Wild Hunt
Diocletian – Gesundrian
Trap Them – Blissfucker
Nux Vomica – Nux Vomica
Ministry – Filth Pig
Barghest – The Virtuous Purge
Blut Aus Nord/P.H.O.B.O.S. – Triunity Split
DopeRunner – Demo
Forest of Tygers – Bruises EP
Bleed the Pigs – Mortis Fatum EP
Visigoth – Vengeance Demo
Sarke – Aruagint
Falconer – Black Moon Rising
Stoic Dissension – Autochthon
Until next week…
Stay Creepy My Friends!
