2014 is off to a heck of a start music wise. This week saw a ton of tremendous new releases and a maybe one or two top 10 contenders for the year. Kampfar continues to impress with their new album Djevelmakt, Yellow Eyes and Wildernessking both put out some incredible EPs, and Grand Magus keeps the epic metal alive with their new album Triumph and Power. There was also some awesome new release by Stormwarrior, Grue and Lascaille’s Shroud, but more about them in a minute.
I’ve also decided that once a day during the week I’m going to revisit albums I’ve neglected over the years. This includes older albums that are new to me, newer releases that got lost in the madness of all the awesome new music and classic albums that I need to spend more time with. This week I started late so I only got in Lord Belial’s Enter the Moonlight Gate, Wolves in the Throne Room’s Black Cascade and Aeternus’s Beyond the Wandering Moon. All of them are excellent albums and so far I’m glad I’m doing this. It’s easy to lose track of albums when there is so much out and coming out. On to the list!
There has been some comparison to Deafheaven’s Sunbather for the new Woods of Desolation and I guess I can understand why. Woods plays that etherial, “pretty,” atmospheric black metal but for my money, this album is better than Sunbather. It still captures that rough production quality of black metal and while expanding the sound and crafting intricate songs and sounds, is still firmly rooted in black metal. Sunbather took all the qualities of these sounds and gussied them up and put a pretty package on them. Woods doesn’t bother with that and instead go for the throat.
This is some pretty interesting, technical melodic death metal but man is this album long. 2 hours plus of this! I think they could do with some editing but the $1 I paid on Bandcamp was worth the price.
This hit me pretty hard this week. Super orchestral, black metal. I know there is a lot of talk about “pretty” black metal as of late but this bands music is absolutely beautiful but punishingly fierce all at the same time. I’m glad I stumbled on this.
Pretty straight forward rocking metal, typical of Grand Magus. That doesn’t mean they’ve toned down the epic-ness at all. Good for getting you up and moving or to put that fist up in the air. Also, they are the number one contender for album cover art of the year so far.
